Marriage Emergency — Lawlessness in New Mexico

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Same-sex 'marriage' activists in New Mexico are not content to wait for the courts. Now they have found a county clerk willing to defy the Governor and Attorney General by issuing illegal 'marriage' licenses to same-sex couples.

It was reported yesterday that Dona Ana County Clerk, Lynn Ellins will start issuing same-sex 'marriage' licenses, against the express directive of the Attorney General. In June, Attorney General King issued a position paper stating same sex marriages are illegal in New Mexico and asked clerks to not begin issuing such 'licenses.' Nevertheless, the Attorney General refuses to put a stop to the issuance of these illegal documents, and that is why the Governor must act right away.

The battle for marriage as God designed has come to The Land of Enchantment; and it's your turn to stand in the breach. Every person who believes marriage to be the union of one man and one woman needs to contact Governor Martinez, urging her and her administration to give their full support to the defense of marriage.

Governor Martinez has been a strong supporter of traditional marriage, now we need her to put the weight of her office behind this vital institution's defense. Please contact Governor Martinez and urge her to intervene to stop the lawlessness in Dona Ana County. Like her colleague Governor Corbett of Pennsylvania, Governor Martinez can and should step in to uphold the rule of law in New Mexico.

Governor Martinez needs to do two things:

  1. Stop the lawless behavior in Dona Ana County; and

  2. Defend the marriage laws of her state in light of Attorney General King's refusal to do so.

This latest action goes beyond the pending lawsuits in New Mexico and moves into the realm of lawlessness and anarchy. County Clerks are not free to make up law on their own; it is there job to uphold the law and serve the people who elected them. But rather than wait for the legal process to conclude Mr. Ellins has gone rogue and chosen to defy the Governor and the Attorney General.

You can make a difference. In Pennsylvania over 700 people contacted Governor Corbett urging him to intervene, and he did.

Please take the time today to contact Governor Martinez and urge her to stand for marriage in the New Mexico courts.

Please, after you have taken action today, use the buttons below to forward and share this email with your family and friends so they can join you in standing for marriage in The Land of Enchantment.

Why Didn't You Hear About This?

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

On Monday I wrote to you about all the good things happening in defense of marriage and asked you to make a donation in support of NOM's work to bolster these efforts around the country.

Here's another good thing you probably haven't heard about: two major polls demonstrate that the majority of Americans believe marriage SHOULD NOT BE redefined.

First, a Rice University poll has surfaced showing that a majority of Americans — 53% — STILL believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman! This comparative study demonstrates that the idea that droves of Americans are changing their minds in favor of redefining marriage is a myth.

And today news of a recent Fox News poll has come to light that is even better. Fox asked the question, Would you approve or disapprove of changing the definition of the word marriage to also include same-sex couples?

56% said they would disapprove, while only 39% would approve!

You are not alone. We are winning this battle in the hearts and minds of every day Americans like you.

But the results of these surveys are being largely ignored in the media because they don't fit into the drum beat that says same-sex 'marriage' is "inevitable."

It is this lie of "inevitability" that we need your financial help to overcome. You may remember NOM's five-point plan I outlined several weeks ago. Point #5 is winning the battle in the court of public opinion — to overcome the false perception of "inevitability." These polls prove we are winning this battle.

Supporter, that's why we need your support. The only way we are going to be able to overcome the extremely well-funded group of extremists and a complicit media pushing this radical agenda is if we have sufficient resources to get our message out.

Won't you please make an immediate, generous donation to NOM to support our work today?

We must rally the religious, grassroots base of America to stand up for marriage. We must get on the airwaves and make sure people understand the nature and purpose of marriage and the consequences of redefining it. We must continue win in the court of public opinion.

So, please, consider making a generous donation to NOM so that we can continue building on all the positives in the fight to defend marriage.

Remember, when you make your gift, if you check the box on the donate page indicating that you want your donation to be an automatic, monthly, recurring gift, we will send you a free copy of NOM co-founder Robbie George's book, What is Marriage?: Man and Woman: A Defense — the best resource out there for anyone interested in defending marriage.

God bless you for all you have done in defense of marriage!

Faithfully,

Congressman Camp is Coming to Town, Tell Him to Stop the IRS

Editor's Note: This email went out to Congressman Camp's district in Michigan, but the issues surrounding the IRS scandal are of national importance. Please look over the blog post below and then call Congressman Camp at 989-631-2552 to demand that he use his power as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee to resolve this egregious violation of NOM's (and all Americans') rights. And if you have family or friends in Rep. Camp's district, please use the social sharing buttons in the post to share this information with them.

Dear Marriage Supporter,

You have a special opportunity to strike a blow for the rule-of-law and the defense of marriage this month. Your Congressman, Dave Camp, is the Chairman of the very important House Ways and Means Committee. This is the Congressional Committee that has been holding hearings on the IRS scandal in Washington, DC.

As you know, NOM has been the victim of a felony crime in that someone within the IRS leaked NOM's confidential tax return in 2012. This criminal provided our tax documents, with the names of several donors, to the Human Rights Campaign and the Huffington Post. It is a felony to have provided this information and to have revealed the confidential names of NOM's donors.

Since learning about this, NOM has filed numerous "Freedom of Information Requests" and demanded that the IRS take action against the perpetrator. To this point NOM has received no satisfactory answer from the IRS as to the status of the investigation or even if one is under way.

The scandal made national news when it was also revealed that the IRS inappropriately targeted conservative organizations for particular scrutiny in the applications for tax-exempt status. However, what happened to NOM goes beyond targeting to a felony crime.

Chairman Camp is holding Town Hall meetings in your district this month to hear from you, his constituents. This is an opportunity for you to go and ask your Congressman, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, what exactly is being done to get to the bottom of the IRS Scandal and restore the rule of law in Washington.

I urge you to make the time to attend one of the Town Hall meetings the Congressman has scheduled and ask him for an explanation and demand the Ways and Means Committee use its power of subpoena to resolve these issues.

Here are several talking points about the scandal; followed by action items NOM has demanded the Ways and Means Committee take to resolve this issue. We urge you also, as his constituent, to respectfully demand the Ways and Means Committee use all its powers to restore credibility in Washington.

  • In March, 2012, someone at the IRS leaked the National Organization for Marriage's confidential tax return — a felony — to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which posted the document on its website. HRC is NOM's principal opponent in the marriage battle and has waged a war of intimidation and harassment against NOM and those active in the effort to preserve marriage. In early 2012, HRC president, Joseph Solmonese, was appointed a national co-chair of the Obama reelection campaign. A few months later, the publication of NOM's tax return occurred.

  • NOM's published Form 990 Schedule B from 2008 contained the identity of dozens of major NOM donors. NOM knows the document was from internal IRS because under a mask that was applied to the document to hide the origin, which computer programs were able to remove, revealed the internal IRS stamp on the document, on every single page in the same location.

  • In early April 2012 after the publication of their tax returns, NOM asked both the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for investigations. NOM knows TIGTA conducted an investigation, but they never identified the perpetrator of this crime. If charges are brought, federal law requires that the taxpayer be advised.

  • Beginning last August 2012, NOM began filing a series of FOIA and Privacy Act requests with TIGTA and the IRS to try to ascertain the status of the investigation, the identity of the perpetrator, and any information relating to where the decision was made to commit this felony against NOM for obvious political purposes. Those requests have been stonewalled, with the latest non-response response, dated May 3, 2013, claiming that the very same statute that was violated by disclosing our returns shields the identity of the perpetrator as the "subject" of an IRS investigation.

  • The IRS, the DOJ, and TIGTA have not brought charges against the individuals who committed these felonies in over a year, and they are using a convoluted interpretation of the statute prohibiting disclosure to shield the identity of those same individuals from NOM.

  • Insist that the House Ways and Means Committee subpoena Joseph Solmonese, and other HRC staff, to determine exactly by what means HRC obtained NOM's confidential donor information

  • Pursue full disclosure from former Acting IRS Commission Steven Miller. Mr. Miller was unable to provide satisfactory answers to the Committee on May 17th. The Committee should subpoena Mr. Miller and require him to give a full account under oath.

  • Some Congressmen are arguing that the IRS scandal should result in broad based tax reform.

  • Tax reform, though a laudable future goal does not help with the immediate problem before us of the criminal theft of confidential donor information.

  • Left unsolved, the theft of donor data is now perpetuating donor intimidation, further eroding public confidence in the ability to Congress to the people's business and emboldening political opponents to engage in more criminal acts and intimidation.

  • Tax reform will not hold those responsible accountable for their actions. We are looking to Congressman Camp, as Chairman of Ways and Means, to aggressively investigate the theft and publication of donor data by the staff of the IRS and the Human Rights Campaign.

Thank you for taking the time to make your voice heard Chairman Camp, and to move this investigation forward. All Americans should be able to engage in the public discourse about marriage without fear of reprisal or harassment.

You can keep up to date on the latest regarding NOM and the IRS scandal here.

Good Things in the Defense of Marriage

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Despite what the mainstream media would lead you to believe, the marriage debate in the United States is very much alive...good things are happening in the defense of marriage.

I'm writing today to ask you to please consider making a generous donation to NOM so that we can continue to build on these positive steps. And when you make your gift, please consider checking the box on the donate page indicating that you want your donation to be an automatic, monthly, recurring gift. We will send all new monthly donor sign ups a free copy of "What is Marriage?: Man and Woman: A Defense" for enrolling as a NOM "Sustaining Partner" of our work.

What things, you ask?

Positive steps like the African American pastors and legislators standing strong for marriage in Illinois and holding back the homosexual 'marriage' advocates who have pledged to spend $3 million to force their will on Illinois later this year.

Positive steps like the courageous Governors of Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Wisconsin who have taken a strong stand for marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

  • In Pennsylvania, Governor Corbett stepped in to defend his state's Defense of Marriage Act and his administration is suing to stop the lawless behavior of a rouge county official issuing same-sex marriage licenses in direct violation of the law.

  • In Wisconsin, Governor Walker has made it clear that his state will not be redefining marriage in the near future.

  • And in Indiana, Governor Mike Pence came out strongly in the wake of the US Supreme Court decisions this summer declaring his support for true marriage and committing his state to put a pro-marriage amendment on the ballot in November 2014.

Positive steps like the 1500 Iowans who attended The Family Leadership Summit that NOM co-sponsored earlier this month demanding that the GOP produce a candidate in the 2016 elections who will stand for marriage and life.

Top to bottom, positive steps are taking place across our country to protect marriage as God designed it.

The media doesn't want you to know about these positive developments so they don't report it, but the truth always finds a way to shine forth. The truth is that a strong majority of Americans believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

We are privileged to be what the Washington Post called "the preeminent organization" standing for marriage as the union of one man and one woman, but we can only do it with your generous support.

And your support is needed as much now as ever. Even with all the positive steps we see across the nation, opponents of marriage and the right of children to be raised by a mom and a dad push their agenda stronger than ever.

In Illinois, gay-marriage activists have promised a $3 million campaign to win over those courageous black legislators that have stood in the gap.

The state ballot battles looming next year in Indiana, Ohio, Oregon, and other states will require every ounce of strength, perseverance, and financial commitment we all can give.

And the legal battles to stop the lawlessness that has broken out across our country in the name of homosexual-'marriage' demand time and financial commitment that we cannot meet without your gracious support.

Let me close with a brief but powerful example of the craziness that supporters of true marriage are up against.

You'll remember that last May in North Carolina, the people of that state approved a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as one man and one woman with over 61% of the vote. You'd think that would be the wonderful end of the story, but no. In blatant disregard for the will of the people of that great state, and the Constitution itself, homosexual-'marriage' advocates are now 'trolling' North Carolina for County and City officials who are willing to abandon their oaths-of-office and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in violation of the Constitution, betraying the voters who put them in office.

They are actually placing ads on YouTube.

Only with your support can NOM continue to help true marriage champions remain strong in the fight and keep taking positive steps in this battle. Remember, if you sign up to become a Sustaining Partner by checking the box to make your gift a monthly, recurring gift, we will send you a free copy of "What is Marriage?: Man and Woman: A Defense."

Thank you for your faithfulness and the positive steps you enable us to take in the defense of God's unique institution of marriage.

For our families and children,

Brian S. Brown

Don't Let Iowa be the Next California

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Last Friday I told you about the witch hunt in Iowa initiated by a homosexual activist whose sole goal is to silence NOM and people like yourself from standing up in public for the truth of God's design for marriage. If you have not been able to give an emergency donation to help us fight this frivolous complaint, please do so today because the story is even more outrageous than even we realized.

Get this: Megan Tooker, Chief Executive and General Counsel for the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board — the very person charged with conducting a fair and impartial investigation into the complaint — worked for Supreme Court Justice Michael Streit, one of the judges we helped remove from office during the 2010 judicial retention campaign! Talk about an apparent conflict of interest. It's no wonder that Ms. Tooker has in effect already publicly "convicted" NOM in absentia through the press. Instead of giving the good people of Iowa ethical and impartial service, Ms. Tooker has revealed her deep bias and animosity by declaring, without seeing any evidence in the case, that NOM is "absolutely false" and "absolutely wrong" in its position. Worse, she has blatantly lied to the public and media by misrepresenting our views on what must be disclosed under Iowa campaign finance laws. Her impertinent behavior is an attempt to poison the well of public opinion against NOM before anyone reviews the actual evidence.

We are not going to accept such outrageous and unprofessional behavior. Yesterday we demanded that Ms. Tooker be removed from any involvement with NOM's case. The people of Iowa are entitled to the highest standards of ethical conduct and independence from the state's top ethics officer, not conflicts of interest and misleading comments.

Sadly, we've seen this type of thing before. Ms. Tooker's behavior is frighteningly reminiscent to Judge Vaughn Walker in San Francisco, who outrageously declared Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional, thus invalidating the votes of over 7 million Californians. Walker refused to disclose that he is homosexual and engaged in a long-term gay relationship despite rules that require federal judges to make such disclosure if a reasonable person would believe him to have a conflict of interest. Just as Walker could never be expected to rule fairly on homosexual marriage, how can Megan Tooker be counted on to fairly handle a complaint that involves a campaign that helped remove her former boss from office?

Whether or not our demand of the Ethics Board that Ms. Tooker be removed from being involved in the complaint against NOM is granted or denied, we still have to defend ourselves from the blatantly false accusations that have been leveled by the homosexual activist who filed the complaint. This defense will cost money, time, and manpower, and distracts us from the critical job of fighting to preserve marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

We prayerfully ask you to stand with us against these forces of animosity and prejudice by making a sacrificial donation today. NOM will not be cowed or intimidated by bullies in the gay marriage movement, and we know the good people of Iowa will stand with us for the truth. Please join us today through an emergency gift so the truth can prevail and NOM can continue to work in Iowa and many other states to restore the true and blessed definition of marriage there.

Public officials and judges with conflicts of interest, frivolous complaints, and misrepresentations and lies to the public and media are all tools of our opponents to silence NOM and people like you who stand for God's truth and design for marriage. Don't let them win! Stand with us today with your generous donation.

Faithfully,

Brian S. Brown

The IRS Must Be Held Accountable

National Organization for Marriage

Tell the Ways and Means Committee to Use Its Subpoena Power to get to the bottom of the IRS Scandal

Witch Hunt in Iowa, We Will Not Be Bowed

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Our opponents are at it again, this time in Iowa. Those who seek to redefine God's design for marriage and eliminate our freedoms of speech and religion have filed another frivolous campaign finance complaint against NOM in an effort to distract us from the defense of marriage and to cost us precious resources in time and money as we are forced to defend these baseless charges.

The reason that our opponents file these baseless charges is that they want access to our internal list of financial supporters so they can then harass people who support true marriage. They've been demanding this confidential information for years, but nonprofit groups don't have to provide donor information to the public. The ACLU doesn't, nor does the Human Rights Campaign, yet many gay marriage activists want to subject NOM to a different set of rules.

We will not give in, and we need you to stand with us as strongly as you ever have. Please make an emergency contribution to NOM today so that we can continue to stand with you in the public square protecting marriage and our religious liberties.

You may remember, in Iowa 2010 NOM and several of our allies campaigned tirelessly against three renegade State Supreme Court Justices who had voted to redefine marriage for the entire state. With your help, our campaign to see these justices removed was a huge success — all three judges were voted out by the people, by double-digit margins.

Now a delusional gay activist who fancies himself becoming president of the United States (really!), has filed a spurious complaint against NOM in Iowa. This same activist has filed complaints in two other states — but no state has ever found that NOM was engaged in wrong-doing.

This is eerily similar to the IRS scandal in Washington, DC where the IRS illegally gave NOM's tax return with confidential donor information to homosexual marriage activists in an attempt to harass our donors and hamper our work.

NOM has violated no campaign finance rules in Iowa. Our 2010 campaign to oust the renegade justices was done within the law. So was our work in 2012 in the campaign seeking to remove an additional justice. This witch hunt is nothing more than an attempt to shut down opposition to activist judges and politicians who wish to redefine marriage, and to intimidate you and our many other supporters. In other words, this harassment is a blatant attempt to restrict the freedom of speech and religion of those who believe marriage is one man and one woman in Iowa.

Like the IRS scandal, the frivolous filing in Iowa will cost a great deal of money, time, and manpower, resources that should be dedicated to upholding God's design for marriage and family.

We cannot give in, but it will take your financial sacrifice today. The battle for marriage is on a knife's edge. NOM is working with its allies across the country in a variety of states where marriage is under attack, and we can't be distracted from these fights. We continue to work hard in Iowa so that the people have the opportunity to vote on the definition of marriage. We have no doubt that if voters are given a say, they will repeal gay 'marriage' and restore marriage to its proper formation. Please make a generous donation today so that our work can continue.

These witch hunts and scandals are weapons of our opponents. NOM has done nothing wrong in Iowa, and has been the victim of a felony crime in the IRS scandal. But we will not be bowed.

And we trust that you will not be bowed either. Please stand with NOM today in the defense of marriage by making a sacrificial gift so that we can carry on the fight despite the despicable efforts of our opponents.

Faithfully,

Brian S. Brown

Illinois Lawmakers Need to Hear from You!

Illinois Family Institute:

It’s almost hard to believe, but there are still several state lawmakers who claim they are “on the fence” on same-sex “marriage” legislation, SB10.  The proponents of same-sex “marriage” have not stopped putting pressure on them and it’s critical that they hear from folks who oppose redefining marriage!

Volunteers NeededSame-sex “marriage” activists have not taken a summer break and have been in full swing over the summer months while most families take some time off for vacations. They are planning a Springfield rally and have launched  a$2 million dollar campaign effort to put people on the ground in many districts statewide.

Pro-family citizens must speak up and take action.  If we don’t, many “on the fence” representatives will cave-in to the tremendous pressure from the homosexual lobby.  The LGBT community is laser focused and relentlessly pursing their goal, and we must courageously step forward to preserve marriage as God created it. Passing same-sex “marriage” will have devastating consequences to children, businesses and people of faith.

It is vitally important to the future of your children and grandchildren to sacrifice a few hours of your time now to help stop this assault on marriage and the family.  If you are able to volunteer, please do so!

Take ACTION:  Please call the IFI office at (708) 781-9328 to learn more or to sign up as a volunteer. Thank you in advance! We look forward to hearing from you!

Support Prop 8 and the Rule of Law

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

As you are undoubtedly aware, the battle over Proposition 8 and the definition of marriage is ongoing in California. And while Governor Brown and Attorney General Harris, with several County Clerks, continue their lawless decree that Prop 8 no longer applies, at least one County Clerk has chosen to follow the rule of law and respect the votes of over 7 million Californians. San Diego Clerk Ernie Dronenberg has asked the California Supreme Court for guidance and direction on whether Proposition 8 still applies.

This confusion was created when the US Supreme Court refused to consider the merits of Prop 8 and dismissed the appeal brought by the proponents of the measure. This left the trial court ruling in effect, but a trial court is powerless to invalidate a law without an appellate court agreeing. With the appeal dismissed, there is no appellate court ruling on Proposition 8.

Merely for asking the California Supreme Court to clarify the law, he is being viciously attacked by homosexual marriage activists, who are demanding that he withdraw his request.

If you have not already, please read the email below and join our California allies in contacting the County Supervisors and voice your support of County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg.

Continuing to Stand for Marriage in California,

Brian S. Brown

How in the world can more than a dozen states vote on constitutional amendments, and their votes count — while our votes on Proposition 8 do not count in California?!

As you know, our courageous County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg filed a lawsuit seeking guidance and clarification by the California Supreme Court as to whether Proposition 8 is still law - because it has not been overruled by any appellate court, and the federal district court injunction against it only applies to Alameda and Los Angeles Counties. Confusing!! Therefore, Ernie's lawsuit is intended to clarify and uphold the rule of law.

As our County Clerk, Ernie Dronenburg is sworn to uphold the California Constitution. His lawsuit seeks to ensure that all marriages performed enjoy constitutional protection.

BUT Ernie has come under fierce attack by special interest groups who oppose Prop. 8, and are seeking to bring heavy political pressure to force Ernie to drop the case.

We must be defensive in this matter! Do not let a very small % of the population speak for you!

Please immediately reach out to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and urge them to support Ernie Dronenburg in this lawsuit. Ask them to encourage Ernie not to withdraw the lawsuit.

Please call or email the below County Supervisors today. Do Not let our Governor and Attorney General overturn the vote of 7 million Californians who voted for Proposition 8.

Here's a sample email — (please write in your own words):
Dear Supervisor Name, as a concerned citizen, voter, and follower of the California Constitution, I would like to urge you to support and encourage County Clerk Dronenburg in his lawsuit filed with the California Supreme Court for clarification and guidance in the matter of Proposition 8. It is important that all marriages enjoy constitutional protection, and Mr. Dronenburg's lawsuit seeks to clarify if Proposition 8 is truly the law, thus protecting all citizens. Please respond to me at: (your email address.) with your decision. Thank you. Sincerely, your name

Thank you. Please send your email to each supervisor below.

Don't Mess with Texas (Marriage Law)!

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Unprecedented, chilling, unconstitutional, and simply wrong.

Those were some of the words used to describe a San Antonio City Council ordinance that would ban from city government anyone who ever uttered a discriminatory word against same-sex marriage. Truth is stranger, and in this case more horrifying, than fiction.

For years we at NOM have been pointing out that one of the biggest threats when marriage is redefined is to our cherished freedom of speech and religious liberties. Now, in San Antonio the City Council is proving our point.

San Antonio is considering a proposal that will add "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to the discrimination ordinances in the city code. People who have been determined to ever have "discriminated" could be barred from employment and subject to other sanctions. This proposed ordinance covers individuals, businesses, religious organizations and places of public accommodation. It provides no exemptions for religious beliefs relating to homosexuality or same-sex marriage. As it stands, the proposed ordinance violates the First Amendment rights to freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of association. Additionally, it violates the rights granted by the Texas Religious Freedom Act and the Texas Constitution.

But believe it or not, sponsors of this ordinance call these measures, "a bare minimum," hinting at broader restrictions to follow.

But it goes even further, the measure is retroactive. If someone has "ever" spoken out in public against same-sex marriage or homosexuality they are subject to the sanctions of this ordinance. Talk about chilling! The mere opposition to redefining marriage or sharing what a person's faith says about homosexuality could be discrimination under the ordinance.

Tell Gov. Martinez to Stand Firm on Marriage

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

The battle for marriage as God designed has come to The Land of Enchantment; and it's your turn to stand in the breach. Every person who believes marriage to be the union of one man and one woman needs to contact Governor Martinez today, urging her and her administration to give their full support to the defense of marriage.

Governor Martinez has been a strong supporter of traditional marriage; now we need her to put the weight of her office behind this vital institution's defense.

As you are probably aware, two men applied for a marriage license in Santa Fe County. A brave County Clerk refused to issue the license because she knew, as you do, that New Mexico's definition of marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

As a result, these men have filed a lawsuit seeking to have New Mexico give legal recognition to same sex marriage. And yesterday the Santa Fe Commission voted to support this suit!

We need the Governor to intervene because the State’s Attorney General is refusing to do so. In fact, the Attorney General has betrayed his oath of office by urging the Court to overturn New Mexico’s recognition of traditional marriage and legalize same-sex marriage.

Now, we need you to make your voice heard by contacting the Governor and urging her to intervene in this case. New Mexico law recognizes the common sense, historically proven definition of marriage as a unique institution that brings men and women together, and provides the ideal place for children to be raised.

You can make a difference. Just in the past week in Pennsylvania, nearly 700 marriage supporters did what I'm asking you to do, and the Governor's administration there has in fact intervened on behalf of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Please take the time today to contact Governor Martinez and urge her to stand for marriage in the New Mexico courts.

And please, after you have taken action today, use the buttons below to share this message on Facebook and Twitter, or forward it via email to your family and friends so they can join us in standing for marriage in The Land of Enchantment.

It's Working — Keep It Up!

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

It's time to thank Governor Corbett for standing for marriage and the rule of law. As much as we "demand" things of our elected officials, we also need to thank them and let them know that they have our support.

Last week, when I wrote to you urging you to contact Governor Corbett about the lawlessness in Montgomery County, I was certain you'd act quickly and decisively—and you did!

Hundreds of you flooded the Governor's office with emails demanding that the rule of law be preserved in Pennsylvania and that the age-old institution of marriage be defended against a reckless and illegitimate attack. Well, I write today to ask you to thank Governor Corbett and his staff for responding.

Yesterday, the Governor's administration took two decisive steps toward upholding marriage law in the Keystone State. The Department of Health filed a case against the lawlessness in Montgomery County. And the Office of General Counsel delivered a strong letter to Attorney General Kane, indicting her failure to defend marriage as contributing to the recent chaos in the Philadelphia suburbs.

So let's write the Governor together today thanking his administration for standing up on behalf of marriage and of the rule of law in Pennsylvania! He needs to know he has our support to continue doing the right thing!

But we also need to remain vigilant and active. The battle is not over.

We need the Governor to firmly and decisively announce his administration's intent to defend Pennsylvania's marriage laws against the recent lawsuit filed by the ACLU, and to ensure that these recent shenanigans in Montgomery County do not impact the legal proceedings in any way.

With the media bias surrounding the issue of marriage, we need the Governor to know that the vast majority of Pennsylvania voters believe in the true definition of marriage. Marriage brings the two halves of humanity together in a special way, and affirms the right of every child to the love of both a mother and a father.

Tell Governor Corbett that you're one of the millions of Pennsylvanians who firmly believe in this common-sense truth about marriage, and that you will continue to stand by those in government who affirm and uphold this most basic institution in our society.

Who Will Hold Them Accountable?

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Ever since the US Supreme Court invalidated the federal definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, we've expected lawsuits would be filed in federal court challenging state laws that also define marriage in the traditional way. Our expectations have certainly been met; over a dozen such lawsuits have now been filed.

What saddens me most about these lawsuits is that some of our elected officials entrusted with defending the laws of the land have chosen to abandon their oaths of office and state law on marriage. In fact, the Attorneys General of both Illinois and Pennsylvania have declared that they will not defend marriage in federal court. They are following the disgraceful path of Attorney General Eric Holder, who refused to defend our federal definition of marriage, and Jerry Brown in California, whose refusal to defend Proposition 8 led to the measure being invalidated by a single judge in San Francisco. The votes of over seven million citizens were eradicated by the view of one man — a homosexual judge involved in a long term gay relationship.

Who will hold these derelict politicians accountable for abandoning the law of marriage in order to curry favor with wealthy homosexual activists?

The only people who can make these politicians pay a price for abandoning marriage is us. Will you give us an immediate contribution of $50, $150, or $250 so that we can send a message to politicians everywhere that if they abandon their duty to defend marriage against attack, they will pay a price. They will be held accountable to their constituents who elected them to defend our state laws, including the law of marriage.

The constitution does not give state politicians the power to pick and choose which laws they will follow and which they will abandon. They are responsible for maintaining the rule of law by defending all the laws of the land. Yet somehow with gay marriage, they are able to get away with it.

Please help us make sure they don't get away with abandoning marriage by donating today.

But it's not just ambitious Attorneys General who have decided to take the law into their own hands. Now some local officials are getting into the act. The Register of Wills in Montgomery County Pennsylvania has decided the he will ignore state law limiting marriage to one man and one woman, and he's openly invited gay couples to seek marriage licenses in his county. He bases his decision on his own personal interpretation of the law after reading Justice Kennedy's majority opinion in the Windsor case concerning the federal definition of marriage.

If some local official were to take the law into his own hands and decide to rewrite a state environmental law, the left would scream in protest. But because this is about same-sex marriage, this utter lawlessness is in fact being celebrated in some quarters and the local official is being called a "hero!" No doubt many ambitious local politicians are waiting to see how this all turns out, so that they might be able to write their own marriage law for their own jurisdiction.

Who will hold these people accountable, if not you and I? Please help us do so.

As we've discussed, NOM is a lean organization with a small staff. Almost everything we raise goes into supporting critical programs to preserve marriage. We are stretched very thin. When new challenges arise like having state Attorneys General and local marriage officials openly defy the law on marriage, we are limited in what we can do to respond unless we are able to raise additional resources. With resources in hand, we can communicate directly with constituents of these elected officials, and ensure that they hear from the people of their jurisdiction. But without added resources, it's entirely possible that politicians who conspire to leave marriage defenseless may get away with it.

Please give today so that we can continue to fight for marriage and hold state and local politicians accountable for their actions in defending laws that define marriage as God created itthe union of one man and one woman.

Faithfully,

Brian S. Brown

Tell Governor Corbett to Stop this Lawlessness!

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

I am outraged, and you should be too, at the news coming from Montgomery County yesterday.

In open defiance to Pennsylvania's laws defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and in violation of their sworn duty as public office holders, officials in Montgomery County yesterday began issuing illegal marriage licenses to same-sex couples!

I need you to join me in telling Governor Corbett right now that we as Pennsylvanians will not stand for this lawless and reckless behavior. Click here to send an urgent message to the Governor demanding that he put a stop to it right away!

The Montgomery County Register of Wills, D. Bruce Hanes, who issues marriage licenses for the county, has decided that he — a county bureaucrat — has the authority to unilaterally rewrite Pennsylvania marriage law. Who does he think he is? The job of enacting laws belong to the legislature and the governor, not county bureaucrats. It's absolute lawlessness in Montgomery County, and it must stop — today!

Governor Corbett is sworn to execute Pennsylvania's duly enacted laws, and these include the laws on marriage which explicitly define marriage as solely the union of one man and one woman. It is imperative that the Governor act today to exercise the full authority and leverage of his office and put a stop to the utter anarchy unfolding in Montgomery County.

This goes way beyond marriage — it undermines the rule of law. Since when do county bureaucrats get away with making their own laws and deciding for themselves who is covered and who is not by the laws they invent? This is sheer legal madness, yet gay marriage activists think they can get away with this corruption of the legal system.

Please click here to tell Governor Corbett that he must uphold the duly enacted law of our land and defend marriage in Pennsylvania against this outrageous and illegal attack!

Let him know that you will be watching and expect him to do whatever is necessary to restore our marriage laws from this illegal, unconstitutional attack which undermines the rule of law and the integrity of government.

As I said in a press release yesterday, this illegal action by Montgomery County officials is an insult to voters, legislators and the rule of law, and once we've ensured that this action has been dealt with appropriately, we'll be asking the state legislature to make sure it cannot happen again by passing a marriage amendment in the Keystone State.

Please, after you have taken action today, use the buttons below to forward this email and share it on Facebook and Twitter so that all pro-marriage Pennsylvanians can speak up about this outrage in Montgomery County!

It's Working!

National Organization for Marriage

Dear Marriage Supporter,

I always talk about how grateful I am for the wonderful grassroots supporters we have here at NOM, brave men and women like YOU who are willing to stand up and speak out in defense of marriage. And there's a reason I'm grateful: because when we band together in support of marriage, it works!

A few weeks ago when I wrote to you urging you to contact your federal legislators urging them to support the Marriage Protection Amendment introduced by Rep. Tim Huelskamp, you were quick to respond. Well, now I can write to you to tell you that when you spoke up, your elected leaders listened!

The proposed amendment now has over 40 cosponsors signed on! Most significantly, it has been announced that the first Democrat (hopefully of many!) has joined as a cosponsor: Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia's 3rd District!

Please click here right away to send a letter to Rep. Rahall and your own Representatives, expressing your appreciation for his stand and urging your own elected officials to follow his example in supporting this crucial legislation!

Rep. Rahall's support proves once again that marriage is an issue that cuts past partisan politics and special interests, speaking universally to our shared common sense principles, such as every child's right to have both a mom and a dad.

The progress already made on getting this amendment to a vote on the floor of the House is only possible because NOM supporters like you band together and take the time to tell your elected leaders that you, and the majority of Americans, stand for marriage — and that those who represent us in Washington need to do the same.

I hope you'll also consider donating generously to NOM today so that we can continue our work in coordinating action items like this one, helping join the voices of pro-marriage citizens everywhere into a united battle cry.

Thank you again for all you do for marriage. Keep it up — it's working!
