Billy Graham, "Most Revered Person in NC", Endorses Marriage Protection Amendment

Billy Graham, who was dubbed the "most revered person in NC" last December by PPP, has endorsed the North Carolina Marriage Protection Amendment.

The Associated Press reports:

The Rev. Billy Graham urged North Carolina voters Wednesday to support an amendment to the state constitution banning gay marriage, a move that an observer said was highly unusual but another said was in keeping with the minister's moral beliefs.

"Watching the moral decline of our country causes me great concern," said Graham, 93, who lives near Asheville. "I believe the home and marriage is the foundation of our society and must be protected."

His complete statement about Amendment One will be part of full-page ads slated to appear in 14 North Carolina newspapers throughout the weekend.

..."At 93, I never thought we would have to debate the definition of marriage," Graham says in the advertisement. "The Bible is clear -- God's definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. I want to urge my fellow North Carolinians to vote for the marriage amendment on Tuesday, May 8. God bless you as you vote."

Dump Starbucks

Welcome to this week's edition of the DumpStarbucks.com News!

Kudos this week go to our brothers and sisters who adhere to a vegetarian or vegan diet. Starbucks has announced that no longer will they use a cochineal dye, which is extracted from a South American beetle, in their food products. What did it take, you might ask, for Starbucks to change the ingredients in their food products? Not too much according to The Seattle Times—just a Change.org petition signed by 6,000 people.

Yep—6,000 people signing a petition were able to persuade Starbucks to do some "obvious soul-searching" about how they made six food products.

So why does Starbucks ignore over 34,000 customers who ask them to take a neutral position on the cultural battle over gay marriage?

The difference is that gay marriage is "core" to who Starbucks is as a corporation. The ingredients in their food and beverages are not, apparently. Does that make sense to you? Not here either. Let's keep up our efforts until they realize they cannot mess with marriage!

What can you do to continue to support the DumpStarbucks.com protest?

Last week's request was pretty simple: Like our Facebook page.

This week I am asking that you forward to your pastor, priest, or other religious leader a flyer that can be included in your church bulletin.

This brief, respectful, and factual bulletin insert (we also prepared a couple of sample power point slides if that is the way your announcements are made) will help you let everyone in your congregation know that Starbucks = Gay Marriage.

Please forward the flyer with a brief note requesting that they be included in the bulletin for an upcoming service. Please feel free to adapt the flyers as you and your pastor think appropriate for your congregation.

While much of the focus on why Starbucks is wrong to support same sex marriage has been on religious and moral concerns, there is also a strong business case to be made for staying neutral on marriage. The fact is that a corporation should not take a position on a controversial social issue that has nothing to do with the business in which the corporation is engaged. Doing so pits the personal beliefs of the employees against the corporate policy of the company. Don't take my word that this is a bad business practice—let's look at what other major corporations have done in regard to the marriage debate and why.

Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers, during a speech to a North Carolina business networking group, was asked by Charlotte Observer editorial page editor Taylor Batten what his position was on the North Carolina Marriage amendment. "As a corporate CEO, I don't comment on social issues. But I'm going to comment on this personally," was the CEO's response. Charlotte Observer reporter Tim Funk followed up on this aspect in his story, "Later, when asked by the Observer why Duke Energy as a corporation wouldn't take a public stand on the amendment, Rogers said the utility has employees who come down on both sides of the issue. It wouldn't be appropriate for the company they work for to take a stand, he said."

There is a company that respects the beliefs of all their employees.

It is not just Duke Energy however. In 2011 Bank of America cut its contract with Frank Turek, a private contractor that provided leadership training to bank employees, because Mr. Turek supports marriage as the union of one man and one woman. More on that story can be found here.

Bank of America later reinstated Mr. Turek as a vendor in good standing—realizing that they had made a mistake in releasing Mr. Turek in their effort to pursue diversity. Later, when a Bank of America technology and operations executive made a video opposing the North Carolina marriage amendment, Bank of America quickly clarified that the executive was speaking as an individual and that the bank was not taking a position for or against the marriage amendment.

These companies, both among the 200 largest in the nation, are not partisans in the culture war. Both offer domestic partner benefits, an anti-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation, and have company-supported LGBT resource groups. Yet they understand that involvement in the culture war over marriage is not appropriate because it pits employees against the company.

Still not convinced? Look to Minnesota where a marriage amendment will be on the ballot this November. Of thirteen Fortune 500 companies contacted only one, St. Jude Medical, said they will publically oppose the amendment to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The next time someone tells you to keep your religious view on marriage at church and leave Starbucks alone, let them know that there are business reasons, adhered to by major corporations, for a company to stay neutral in the marriage debate.

Starbucks has already heard from 34,000 customers and counting that they do not approve of the marriage stance taken by the corporation. Let's keep up our efforts!

Judge Allows Pro-Marriage Group to Intervene in Hawaii Lawsuit

Local KHON2:

A federal judge ruled that supporters of Hawaii's current marriage law can participate in a federal lawsuit.

The Hawaii Family forum will be allowed to present evidence as "interveners" in the suit.

In December a same-sex couple sued the state claiming they are being denied their constitutional right to marry, because civil unions are not the same.

In court filings, Governor Abercrombie agrees that the laws violate the constitution, while his health director plans to defend the same-sex marriage ban.

A Savaged Student Speaks Out

The Blaze:

Jake Naman, an 18-year-old Christian from Redlands, California, was in the crowd before Savage’s words turned ugly. In an interview with FOX News, he described the lewd and inappropriate commentary Savage presented to the students. But while Naman was becoming more and more uncomfortable throughout the speech, there was a specific point at which he knew that the rhetoric would come flowing — when Savage mentioned “the Bible.”

“The very second he said the Bible and paused, I knew it was going to get ugly,” Naman said in an interview with Fox News. “It was about to be a bashing.”

In a show of courage, Naman, who says he felt bullied (ironic, considering the catalyst’s “It Gets Better” efforts), stood up and walked out of the event.

“I felt like in my heart I couldn’t just stay there at all. It was a really weird feeling I just had to get out,” he said. “I didn’t want to cause a scene but I really could not stand to be in that room anymore.”

In retrospect, the teen has plenty to say about Savage and the appropriateness of his words, specifically when it comes to the standards that Christians are held to.

While Naman thought he was alone in walking out of the event, when he got to the lobby he realized that others had joined him. Among them was 17-year-old Haley Mulder.

“I never felt more hurt, felt persecuted,” Mulder explained. “For me, my faith is what I want to be defined by. For someone to say it was B.S. is really hurtful. I felt put down and bullied because of my faith.”

According to Naman, some of the girls were crying as a result of Savage’s comments. So far, the advocate has done little more than apologize for using the term “pansy assed.” Additionally, he is standing by his characterization of the Bible.

If you have not yet signed our petition to President Obama about Dan Savage please do so today!

VIDEO: TFP Volunteers "Attacked by Tolerance"

TFP Student Action, a group that aims to promote traditional moral values on college campuses, recently released this startling footage, which shows dozens of less-than-tolerant encounters with same-sex marriage advocates out on the street.

When you watch same-sex 'marriage' activists destroy your signs, desecrate the Bible, blaspheme, and burn your literature, it becomes clear that the homosexual agenda is not really about tolerance. It's about the formation of a strange dictatorship – a dictatorship of pseudo-tolerance and make-believe equality..." -TFP director John Ritchie

U-Turn Tory MPs Tell Constituents: "We Were Wrong on Gay Marriage" in Bid to Win Back Voters

Buyer's remorse?

David Cameron is under intense pressure to ditch his gay marriage initiative amid claims that Tory MPs fear they are 'haemorrhaging' votes over the issue.

The Mail on Sunday has been told that Chief Whip Patrick McLoughlin has privately assured anxious Tory backbenchers that the Prime Minister's same-sex marriage plan will 'not come to a vote'.

The MPs say Mr McLoughlin told them the controversial proposal will be 'kicked into the long grass'.

The Chief Whip, a former miner, is one of the most senior Roman Catholics in the Conservative Party.

The pressure on Mr Cameron has been increased by warnings that a Tory rebellion in the Commons would eclipse last year's EU referendum revolt, when 81 Conservatives defied the Prime Minister.

District Attorneys, Law Enforcement Officials Rebut Allegations of Domestic Violence Impact of Marriage Amendment

A follow-up from yesterday's press conference hosted by Vote for Marriage NC featuring a wide array of experts rebutting the false claims spread by opponents of the Marriage Amendment:

Today, a coalition of District Attorneys, legal professionals, and other law enforcement officials sharply rebutted claims that the pending constitutional amendment on marriage would strip citizens of domestic violence protections, as is being claimed in television ads being aired by amendment opponents. The officials say such allegations are utterly false.

“I am concerned about the false and misleading claims that are being made by opponents of the Marriage Protection Amendment,” said Rockingham County District Attorney Phil Berger, Jr., Vice President of the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys. “Citizens should have no concern that the marriage amendment will impact domestic violence prosecution, because it will not.”

Berger was joined at the press conference by Jeff Hunt, District Attorney from Prosecutorial District #29B (Henderson, Polk, and Transylvania Counties), Tom Keith, former District Attorney from Prosecutorial District #21 (Forsyth County), Raven Byrne, family law attorney in Wake County, and Paul Wright, former District and Superior Court Judge. Additionally, a written statement was issued by over a dozen prosecutors and law enforcement officials that said, “The protections of North Carolina’s domestic violence statute (General Statutes 50B-1) do not depend on the marital status of the victim or her relationship to the abuser. The law very clearly provides identical protections to married spouses as they do to unmarried women or men who have shared a household with the abuser. We encourage citizens to read the easily understandable law for themselves.”

In addition to Berger, Hunt, Keith, Byrne, and Wright, signers of the statement from law enforcement officials included the following:

Locke Bell – District Attorney, Prosecutorial District #27A (Gaston County)
Wallace Bradsher – District Attorney, Prosecutorial District #09A (Caswell andPerson Counties)
Garry Frank – District Attorney, Prosecutorial District #22B (Davidson and DavieCounties)
Jay Gaither – District Attorney, Prosecutorial District #25 (Burke, Caldwell andCatawba Counties)
Terry Johnson – Sheriff, Alamance County
John Snyder – Former District Attorney, Prosecutorial District #20B (UnionCounty)
Jerry Wilson – District Attorney, Prosecutorial District #24 (Avery, Madison,Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey Counties)
Carey Winders – Sheriff, Wayne County

“We are pleased that these leading prosecutors and law enforcement officials have stepped forward to make it clear that the Marriage Protection Amendment will have absolutely no impact on victims of domestic violence,” said Tami Fitzgerald, Chairwoman of the Vote FOR Marriage NC campaign. “But we are distressed by the wholly dishonest and false advertising campaign being waged by our opponents. There are 30 state constitutional amendments defining marriage in this country, and not one has resulted in domestic violence protections being denied to unmarried people. Our opponents have completely abandoned campaigning on the marriage issue because they know that an overwhelming majority of North Carolinians support marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Putting our existing definition of marriage into the state constitution is all the amendment does.”

Digging Deeper into the North Carolina Polls: The "Seven Point Effect"

We just reported two polls that show the NC Marriage Amendment up by 14 and 20 points respectively. Why the disparity?

The most recent PPP poll overestimates 18-29 year olds by about 4 points, and, more importantly, underestimates voters over the age of 66 by about 10 point:

This alone is worth 3-4 points for the marriage amendment, not counting the "7 point effect."

What is the "7 point effect"?

Patrick Egan, a political scientist at NYU, issued a paper (PDF here) in 2010 that analyzed an abundance of polling data from 1998 until 2009 on a number of marriage-related ballot measures. Among other things, he found that the measures under-poll by an average of seven points. He did not find that either "social desirability bias" (fear of saying how one will actually vote) or voter confusion explained this gap, and left the explanation as an open question.

Regardless of the reason, there is consistent evidence that these marriage protection measures under-poll, and that the projected level of support is a "lowball" figure.

Now, this is obviously no reason to let up, but it is worth bearing in mind as we enter the final week of the North Carolina campaign.

SurveyUSA Poll Shows North Carolina Amendment Up 20%!

It is interesting to note that according to this poll the Marriage Protection Amendment leads by a wider margin among people who have yet to vote:

"One week until votes are counted, a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between one man and one woman leads by a 5:3 margin, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WRAL-TV Raleigh. The measure passes today 57% to 37%, with majority support among men and women, black and white, rich and poor, and in all parts of the state. Opposition is most strong among Democrats and independents, but rises to a majority only among the relatively small number of voters who identify themselves as liberals.

Among the 10% of voters who tell SurveyUSA they have already cast their ballot, the measure leads narrowly, by 4 points. Among those identified as being likely to vote, the measure leads by 22 points. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 6 weeks ago, little has changed."

This poll took place from April 26-30th.

Latest PPP Poll: NC Marriage Amendment Still Leads by 14%!

Despite deceitful campaign ads from the opposition claiming the Marriage Protection Amendment will do things it simply will not do, left-leaning PPP still finds the marriage amendment up by 14 points, the same margin as it was last week:

PPP's newest poll on the North Carolina marriage amendment shows little movement from a week ago. 55% plan to vote yes next week, while 41% are opposed.

... If the amendment ultimately passes it will have a lot to do with the fact that Republicans (76/21) are considerably more united in their support of it than Democrats (42/54) are in their opposition. Independents are split almost evenly, 48/46 in favor of the amendment.

BP: Half of North Carolina Marriage Amendment Signs Stolen; Vandalism Reported

The Baptist Press:

Roughly half of the yard signs around North Carolina supporting a proposed constitutional marriage amendment have been stolen or damaged, according to the communications director for the group promoting the amendment.

... "We have distributed tens of thousands of yard signs across the state, and about half of them are now gone due to vandalism, destruction and unlawful removal," Lee estimated.

The blue rubber signs are attached to a metal frame and say: "On May 8th, Vote FOR the Marriage Amendment."

In some instances, Lee said, people vandalize the signs and then post pictures on Facebook or Twitter.

... Signs are just disappearing all over the state, while the other side's signs are remaining," Lee said. "It's difficult to say who is taking them. All we know is that they are being removed and destroyed."

There also have been instances of billboards being defaced. In one part of the state, someone climbed up a pro-amendment billboard and spray painted the word "against" on the billboard so that it read -- although crudely -- "Vote against the Marriage Amendment." The billboard had been paid for by a Beacon Baptist Church. In another part of the state, someone used spray paint to post the message "only God can judge" on a pro-amendment billboard.

In Hickory, N.C., the church marquee of Tabernacle Baptist Church and School was vandalized. The church had used its marquee to promote a "Marriage Sunday" for April 22. The sign said nothing about the marriage amendment, but someone spray painted "Hate Speech" on one side and "Love Not Hate" on the other.

The Bully Pulpit?

Email Header Image

Dear Marriage Supporter,

By now you've probably heard about leading gay marriage activist Dan Savage's vile attack on Christian teens during his "anti-bullying" presentation at a student journalism conference in Seattle last month.

But did you know that President Obama has endorsed Dan Savage and his "It Gets Better" campaign as a core part of the official White House campaign against school bullying?

Is this what stands for "anti-bullying" inside the Obama White House?

Please take a moment right now to tell President Obama that Savage's hostility toward Christians has no place in an anti-bullying campaign.

Tolerance and respect for the basic human dignity of each person is core to what we believe at NOM. There is simply no excuse for bullying—in any arena—and the White House is right to encourage a culture of civility and respect in our nation's schools.

But when a key gay marriage spokesman verbally abuses students simply because they are Christians who believe what the Bible teaches about marriage and sexuality...President Obama has to draw a line.

What part of "anti-bullying" does Dan Savage not get?

You can see Savage's unbelievable attack here, but we warn you—this is a profanity laden attack on faith, and not for children's eyes or ears.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Savage has descended to such lows—including grotesque efforts to infect presidential candidate Gary Bauer with the flu in 2000, and more recently targeting Sen. Rick Santorum and Pastor Rick Warren with verbal abuse and vulgar intimidation tactics.

Dan Savage is one of the leading pro-gay marriage activists in the nation. He regularly appears on national television shows to advocate his peculiar ideas about marriage, including repudiating the idea that marriages should be faithful and monogamous. Though he likes to shroud himself in "anti-bullying" language, Savage is himself a notorious bully, as the video shows. Savage has even said that the media should stop giving coverage to any pro-traditonal marriage voice, likening supporters of marriage to the KKK.

It's time for Savage to go, and I hope you'll join me in calling on President Obama to make it clear that the Obama Administration does not condone Dan Savage's attack's on people of faith.

NC Marriage Battle: What Does it Look Like From the Other Side?

In the gay paper The Advocate, those who are running the campaign against North Carolina's marriage amendment are expressing frustration and disappointment that so many "big players" have declined to play in North Carolina:

...Jeremy Kennedy, campaign manager for the anti-Amendment One coalition, said he maintained hope that the DNC and other large organizations would offer help to defeat the antigay initiative in the final days.

"I am disappointed, because I believe a commitment of resources to North Carolina is right in line with the statements of support we have heard from the President and Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz,” he said. “Especially in the state that will hold the Democratic Nation Convention, I believe it is all the more important for the DNC to be fully invested in a win in North Carolina - which means a fully funded campaign.”

Many leading LGBT political donors active in other state campaigns, including the Gill Action Fund, also appear to have declined to make contributions in North Carolina.

... Freedom to Marry, which has been instrumental in several marriage equality battles over the past year, previously decided not to invest in the North Carolina effort as part of its $3-million Win More States Fund, which focuses instead on states such as Minnesota, Washington, and Maine.
