Washington Bishop Emphasizes: SSM Will Threaten Religious Liberty

Pro-SSM activists in the four states voting on marriage often claim that voting to redefine marriage will protect religious liberty, even though we have seen in state after state the safest way to guarantee religious freedom is to respect and protect our marriage tradition.

Bishop Joseph Tyson of Yakima, WA agrees:

As voters in the State of Washington prepare for a referendum on same-sex marriage, Bishop Joseph Tyson of Yakima has written a pastoral letter urging Catholics to uphold marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

... Bishop Tyson, whom Pope Benedict appointed bishop of Yakima in 2011, also warned of same-sex marriage’s threat to religious liberty:

R-74 jeopardizes freedom rather than expands it. It endangers our religious liberty and the right of conscience. Once marriage is redefined as a genderless contract, it will become legally discriminatory for public and private institutions such as schools to promote the unique meaning of marriage, and to teach about the right of a child to be known, loved and raised by his or her own mother and father in a stable home. This law will challenge our right to educate about the unique value of children being raised by their own mothers and fathers. No institution or individual could propose that married mothers and fathers provide a singular benefit to children without being accused of discrimination.

This is not an idle concern. Recent attacks on churches, businesses and nonprofit organizations that express their conscientious objection to the redefinition of marriage underscore this danger. Those who uphold families based on the permanent, faithful relationship between a married man and woman as the best environment for raising children already have been accused of hate speech, and the right of religious institutions to freely practice their faith has been abridged.

“I opened this letter with a wedding picture of my parents,” Bishop Tyson said. “I close by asking you to consider what kind of picture of marriage you desire to give the next generation. If you and I don’t uphold marriage as the union of a man and a woman, who will? If we are intimidated by those supporting marriage redefinition who picket and threaten donation boycotts of our charity and our ministry, then who will proclaim the true meaning of marriage?”

“This is the Church’s mission given to us by Christ,” he concluded. As bishop, I intend to clearly, fearlessly and boldly proclaim this message – not only for your consideration – but the consideration of everyone.” -- Catholic Culture

Prof. Regnerus Explains What Makes His Study Different

Prof. Mark Regnerus sat down with Christianity Today to explain more about his study on outcomes of children raised by a same-sex parent:

How does your methodology compare with those used in previous surveys on this topic?

This is the key area of distinction between my study and most others. Almost all studies that came before this one were small and "nonrandom." That is, we have no idea how similar most other studies' research participants are to the general population they seek to study. And with many previous studies, I think it's fair to be skeptical. For example, if you know you're participating in a small study on gay parenting and that it'll make the news and perhaps have political ramifications, I think it's fair for scholars to wonder whether such a study will yield valid, reliable data.

The NFSS, on the other hand, is much larger than most others, and is a random sample of the population of American adults ages 18–39. I focused not on their parents' sexual orientation—after all, it was a quite different era back then—but on their parents' relationship behavior. So I compared how young adults whose mothers or fathers had a same-sex relationship fared when analyzed alongside other types of arrangements, including the traditional, biologically intact married mother and father.

Despite The Vocal Few, Many Lutherans Support the Marriage Amendment

Ryan MacPherson, founding president of the Hausvater Project, a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization that says its mission is to "equip Christian men and women for distinctive and complementary vocations in family, church, and society, by fostering research and education in light of Holy Scripture as proclaimed by the Lutheran Confessions" writes in to Minnesota Public Radio:

One out of four Minnesotans affiliates with a Lutheran church. A casual reading of the daily news may give the misleading perception that Lutherans, as a group, promote same-sex coupling and oppose the Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment. But that generalization is not only hasty; it is false. Lutherans long have treasured the unique union of one man and one woman known as marriage, and many Minnesota Lutherans are prepared to uphold that heritage by voting for the Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment this November.

.. Within the ELCA, the marriage debate represents merely the latest chapter in a long story of departure from biblical teaching. For over a decade, WordAlone Ministries has been guiding troubled ELCA congregations through the process of trying to restore the church body to historic Lutheran theology or, insofar as that has failed, exiting and affiliating with other Lutherans who hold to the sanctity of natural marriage. Meanwhile, Allan Carlson, an ELCA layman, serves as president of the Howard Center and international secretary of the World Congress of Families. Both in America and abroad, he has worked to defend the causes of husbands, wives and their children in accord with the natural law of the family.

Other Lutheran supporters of natural marriage include the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), which cosponsored an amicus brief for the U.S. Court of Appeals in support of California Proposition 8. The LCMS brief objected to Judge Vaughn Walker's reckless mischaracterization of Lutherans as "bigots." Another Lutheran organization, the Hausvater Project (of which I am the founding president), submitted a brief demonstrating that the legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts had insidiously curtailed parental rights.

Most Lutherans supportive of natural marriage are less vocal than the handful of activists calling for a radical redefinition of the time-tested institution upon which every human society has been founded. Lutherans usually are a modest and quiet bunch. I ought to know: My wife and I had a potluck for our Lutheran wedding reception.

But even modest and quiet people vote, and I foresee a good number of Lutherans joining me in checking "Yes" for a constitutional protection of natural marriage.

It's up to our side to be vocal too!

Video: Tony Perkins' 5 Point Battle Plan for Maine Pastors

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins with a special message to the pastors of Maine urging them to mobilize for marriage:

Black Clergy Plan $1M Anti-Obama Effort Over Same-Sex Marriage

We've already reported the Zogby poll finding that 18% of African Americans remain undecided about supporting President Obama. A new group aims to increase that to at least 25%:

Unhappy with President Barack Obama‘s support of same-sex marriage, a group of African-American faith leaders have announced a campaign aimed at stripping 25 percent of the black vote that went to Obama in 2008 (95 percent).

The newly formed nonprofit group, God Said, will begin targeting voters in Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Florida with television and radio advertising, as well as a grassroots campaign to encourage people to consider the gospel when they enter the voting booth.

“The black community is among the most religious in America and we are offended that President Obama has announced his support of same-sex marriage, that the NAACP has blindly supported the secular views of the Democratic Party, and that their national platform plainly supports same-sex marriage,” said Apostle Claver Kamau-Imani ofRagingElephants.org, and a God Said founder, in a statement. “I am confident that this message will be well received and acted upon on Election Day.”

The group currently has 22 advisory board members and plans to spend an estimated $1 million on the campaign, a spokesperson told TheDC, adding that its message has support among other faith leaders and congregants, including the Coalition of African-American Pastors (CAAP), which has vociferously protested against Obama’s same-sex marriage stance. Some of the CAAP members are on the God Said board. -- The Daily Caller

NAACP Launches Ads Supporting Same-Sex Marriage in Maryland

They did the same thing in North Carolina to little measurable effect:

The NAACP of Maryland is launching a radio ad on Tuesday urging support of the same-sex marriage referendum on next month’s ballot, the group said.

... African-American voters are seen by both sides as a key demographic. Opponents of same-sex marriage are working through black churches . Supporters were heartened this summer by endorsements of same-sex marriage by both President Obama and the NAACP.

In the new radio ad, Bond also argues that the issue is not primarily about religion. “I believe people of faith understand this isn’t about any one religious belief – it’s about protecting the civil right to make a lifelong commitment to the person you love,” he says. -- WaPo's Maryland Politics blog

Maryland Pastors Preach Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage From Pulpit

The Baltimore Sun:

Bishop Willard E. Saunders Jr. quieted his Cherry Hill sanctuary Sunday morning, signaling for the music and the hallelujahs to stop so his words would come across clearly.

"If something is perfect, it does not need changing," Saunders said, his image beaming from two screens on either side of the pulpit. "You can't redefine what God has already called perfect.

"Marriage, the institution, is perfect," he continued. "It is the people who are imperfect."

The Hour of Power sermon was repeated in black churches across Maryland Sunday and will keep going all month, part of a coordinated effort by opponents of same-sex marriage to spread their message from the pulpit leading up to the referendum on Nov. 6. The Archdiocese of Baltimore, though technically not part of the "Marriage Sundays" effort, encouraged its priests to talk about the coming same-sex marriage referendum Sunday since the set scripture focused on marriage.

NOM Political Director Schubert in NYT: "The More I Learned About the Marriage Issue, The More Committed I Became"

Our president Brian Brown says of our political director Frank Schubert in the New York Times that he is simply "the best in the business" and all of us could not agree more!

"...Mr. Schubert, 56, attended Catholic schools in Sacramento, Calif., where he still lives with his wife. At age 22, he was chief of staff to a Republican assemblywoman. He entered public relations and became known, in the world of political consultants, for winning dozens of issue-oriented ballot campaigns on behalf of corporations: defeating proposals to increase tobacco taxes and to require restaurants to offer health insurance to employees.

He had not thought much about the marriage issue, he said, before he was tapped in 2008 to run the Proposition 8 campaign, which was mounted by religious conservatives to override the California Supreme Court decision permitting same-sex marriage. With a budget of $40 million, more than matched by opponents, he mounted a campaign with button-pushing ads. With that victory, Mr. Schubert won national attention, and his life took a sharp turn.

“The more I learned about the marriage issue, the more committed I became,” he recalled.

He threw himself into the cause, teaming with the National Organization for Marriage, which pays him a retainer for strategic advice. Brian S. Brown, the organization’s president, praised Mr. Schubert in an interview as “the best in the business.”

This year, as his activism began to turn off corporate clients, Mr. Schubert left Schubert Flint Public Affairs, the consulting firm he founded in 2003, and started a new one, Mission: Public Affairs, which he says will be entirely devoted to social causes.

“I think God has a plan for our lives,” Mr. Schubert said of his shift."

North Carolina: "Same-Sex Marriage Divides Allies" as 18% of African Americans Remain Undecided

A new Zogby poll found 18% of African Americans are undecided about who they will support in November.

Ramifications of the President's marriage flip-flop? The Charlotte Post looks at the question:

When President Obama publicly stated his personal approval of same-sex marriage, the black church went into a state of controversy.

How can you be a Christian and support homosexuality? How does a Christian support a president who believes in same-sex marriage? Where does the black church go from here with their support of the president?

These and a myriad of other questions proliferated from the hearts of clergy and faith leaders across the country. What do they tell their congregations?

One unfavorable response has sparked a movement that is getting the attention of congressional members. Some pastors are instructing their members to stay at home and not vote at all, rather than vote against Obama.

The recent Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference dedicated a roundtable discussion on the black church and same sex marriage.

Connecticut Republican Senate Candidate Loses Conservative Endorsement After Abandoning DOMA

Drop the defense of DOMA and you will lose conservative support -- support which can prove critical, come election day:

Peter Wolfgang, director of the conservative Family Institute of Connecticut, has taken back his endorsement of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon, although he is still voting for her “because her victory could mean the end of Roe v. Wade.”

The announcement, first reported by the Hartford Courant, was on the institute’s Facebook page Monday.

Wolfgang had endorsed McMahon in September, but pulled back when she said after a political debate Sunday that she now backs repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.

“I’m still voting for Linda because her victory could mean the end of Roe v. Wade. But because Linda McMahon flip-flopped and now supports a repeal of DOMA — the one federal law that stops Connecticut’s judicially imposed re-definition of marriage from being imposed on the rest of the nation — my September 18th endorsement of her is no longer accurate,” he wrote on Facebook. -- New Haven Register

SSM Flip-Flopper Addabbo Only Leads by 2 Points

Eric Ulrich and Joseph Addabbo

NOM has not forgotten about the New York State Democrat Flip-Flopper Joseph Addabbo who only leads his challenger by 2 points:

"...Addabbo, a Queens Democrat who holds a 2-point edge over Republican New York City Councilman Eric Ulrich, was one of three Democrats to vote in favor of same-sex marriage last year after previously voting against it in 2009." -- Albany Watch

Video: Washington State Pastors Give 5 Reasons to Protect Marriage in November

Check out this inspiring video from Preserve Marriage Washington of Washington State pastors explaining why to protect marriage by rejecting Referendum-74:

NOM Donates $400K, KofC Donates $250K to Critical Washington State Fight

We're all working hard to raise the funds needed to win in November in all four states voting on marriage.

We've already raised, for instance, almost $100K at www.MillionDollarMarriageMatch.com (which equals almost $300K!).

SeattlePI reports on new resources we've been able to send to Washington State with your support -- as well as efforts by the fraternal Catholic organization the Knights of Colombus:

The campaign war chest for opponents of same-sex marriage in Washington has started to swell, following a pattern of concentrated late-campaign contributions set in California’s Proposition 8 battle four years ago.

The umbrella group Preserve Marriage Washington, which is fighting Referendum 74 on the November ballot,  reported on Monday a $250,000 donation from the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, and $400,000 from the National Organization for Marriage.

Preserve Marriage Washington has now raised $1.776 million.

... Opponents will get a boost Wednesday when ex-Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican presidential candidate earlier this year,  speaks at Spokane and Bellevue fundraising events for the Family Policy Institute of Washington.

1776, that's a good number! It reminds us of www.KeepTheRepublicandMarriage.com.

Video: No on Question 1's First Ad Shows Consequences of Redefining Marriage, and How Marriage Serves Maine

The Associated Press reports on the two new campaign videos launched this week by Protect Marriage Maine:

A high school guidance counselor whose job was targeted after he spoke out against same-sex marriage is featured in a television campaign by gay marriage opponents that launches Monday.

One of the two ads by Protect Marriage Maine features Donald Mendell of Palmyra, who was subject of a complaint with the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation after appearing on TV during a 2009 referendum in which the state’s gay marriage law was repealed.

The ad says that in states where same-sex marriage has been legalized, opponents like Mendell have been ‘‘fired, sued, fined and punished.’’

‘‘I was a successful school counselor in Maine for over 20 years — once nominated as teacher of the year. Yet when I supported traditional marriage, they tried to get me fired,’’ Mendell says in the 30-second television spot.

A second ad says the rights of same-sex couples can be protected through an existing domestic registry without the need for changing the definition of marriage. ‘‘Every Mainer has a right to love whom they choose but nobody has the right to redefine marriage,’’ it says.

With a month to go until Election Day, the television campaign marks a public escalation in debate by gay marriage opponents, who've been outspent in the campaign.
