Prof. Matthew Franck on the Weakness of the Case for SSM

Prof. Matthew Franck writes in the Public Discourse on the false framing that looks past the fundamental weakness of the case to redefine marriage:

"The trouble for [Prof. John] Corvino begins with the tissue-thin brevity of the positive case he makes for “marriage equality,” as he calls it. In a mere eight pages or so—constituting just a tenth of his opening “case for same-sex marriage”—Corvino tells us that marriage, more than any other arrangement or institution in which two people can take part, “promotes mutual lifelong caregiving.” This, he would have us believe, is the core, the irreducible purpose of marriage, its true raison d’être.

Some homosexual couples really want to enter into such an arrangement, and to have it called “marriage” under the law with all the attendant rights and recognition that accompany the label. For Corvino, their desire for this recognized arrangement supplies them with a presumptive right to it, in the name of equality. And so for the remainder of his main statement, and his reply to Gallagher’s statement, Corvino devotes all his space to attempted rebuttals of the opposing view.

... The case in its favor is so undeniably weak, as Corvino’s contributions to this book demonstrate, that the progress the same-sex marriage “movement” has made is an amazing tale of the incantatory power of the word “equality.” When the incantation fades, and sense returns to those who have been bewitched by it, the idea of same-sex marriage will once again retreat to the margins of society. That will be a victory of justice over tyranny. The only question is, will we resist the disastrous error of an experiment with a lie, or will we try to live the lie and then have to recover from it? Human societies have experimented with lies before. It is better to avoid them in the first place."

Forbes Columnist: Chick-fil-A May Have Booked Over $100 Million Yesterday

"...So, how was the chicken? Amazing! Now I know why people love this place. The store was run extremely well. Clean, polite and efficient. The staff brought water to those in line, they handed out umbrellas for protection from the sun and they served delicious food quickly. This has been replicated across the nation. This huge one day movement involving millions of supporters made their opinions heard and voted with their money and presence. It has been estimated that the chain will have booked almost $100 million or more just today.

When I returned home I turned on the news to see how this would be reported. NBC in Los Angeles chose to focus on the protesters. Not the ones supporting Chick-Fil-A but, the ones protesting the supporters. The protesters are a tiny fraction to the supporters yet the media focused 90% of their attention on those few. This does not represent the truth of the actual event. The meme from the anti-Chick-Fil-A groups proclaim that opposition to gay marriage is anti-gay."

Pastor Rick Warren, according to the Weekly Standard, tweeted on Wednesday: "Dan Cathy just called me. ChickfilA has already set a world record today, with 7 more hrs to go in the West."

Rush Limbaugh: "On November 6th, Obama's Gonna Get Chick-fil-A'd Himself."

"...Let me tell you something. I am being bombarded with e-mail from my website account, the Rush 24/7 member e-mail, with stories just like the one you're telling from all over this country about how crowded the Chick-fil-As are, about how long the lines are. Get this, Jay, I just got an e-mail from a guy who said where he lives, that on the sign at the neighboring Wendy's, it says, "Today go to Chick-fil-A." I don't know where this is, but I'll bet it's not the only example of it. A local Wendy's is telling it's customers, "Today, we think you should go to Chick-fil-A," or something like that. You know, it's happening all over, and it's political.

... I'll tell you what's gonna happen on November 6th, Obama's gonna get Chick-fil-A'd himself. He's gonna get Chick-fil-A'd, and, folks, pictures continue to come in, and I'm asking myself, where are the news media satellite trucks today? Where are all the man-on-the-street news reports of this? I wonder if your local news will cover this tonight at 5 and 11, amidst all the murders and blood and everything else they cover, government corruption. Wait, they don't talk about -- never mind. But I'm just wondering, I mean, this is a major, major event. "

Brian Brown on How Same-Sex Marriage Will Help Determine the Election

Our president Brian Brown talks to John Roberts of Fox News:

"..."Key Democratic constituencies do not support same-sex marriage," said Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage. "And I think that you are going to see a real lack of support for President Obama from them and then folks in the middle."

Romney may be angling for some of those votes. But while some conservatives are still anxious over where he actually stands, NOM's Brian Brown needs no convincing.

"If you go back to Massachusetts, people say no, no he wasn't strong on the issue", Brown told Fox News. "If you actually look at what he did, he stood up for a state constitutional amendment. He fought so that the people could vote."

... On the campaign trail, Romney doesn't talk much about the issue, leaving statements of "support for traditional marriage" to significant speeches like his appearances at Liberty University and the NAACP convention. Brown appreciates the support, though he wishes Romney -- and his fellow Republicans -- would talk more about it.

"There are plenty of Republican strategists in this town -- inside the Beltway that want to run from this issue. They think it is too divisive. They don't want to bring it up -- they don't want to talk about it," he told Fox News.

Brown is determined to make same-sex marriage a major issue in the fall campaign. Ironically, it may be the split in the Democratic Party that fuels the debate more than anything Republican candidates are planning.

Chicago Church Leaders Roast Rahm Emanuel Over Chick-fil-A Stance

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has ticked off the flocks by criticizing Chick-fil-A.

Days after the big city boss blasted the chicken chain over its president's stance on same-sex marriage, an influential Baptist minister and Cardinal Francis George of the Archdiocese of Chicago struck back. The religious leaders, who support the traditional view of marriage, were incensed at Emanuel's claim that "Chick-fil-A's values are not Chicago's values."

"Do not disrespect us...We, too, are Chicago," the Rev. Charles Lyons of the Armitage Baptist Church thundered from the pulpit Sunday.

Cardinal Francis George also criticized Emanuel's stance, asking in the Catholic Chicago Blog if everyone who did not agree with Emanuel faced a similar fate.

"Must those whose personal values do not conform to those of the government of the day move from the city," George wondered. "Is the City Council going to set up a 'Council Committee on Un-Chicagoan Activities' and call those of us who are suspect to appear before it?"

Over 665,000 people responded on Governor Mike Huckabee's Facebook event page saying they would visit Chick-fil-A on Wednesday. Media outlets across the nation carried the story. Chick-fil-A locations were swamped with customers.

My inbox was flooded with hundreds of pictures from all across the nation yesterday. Click here to see just a small sampling of the tremendous outpouring of support Americans gave the Cathy family yesterday.

Marriage Making National News

Chick-fil-A rules the roost this week in terms of the top news in the battle over marriage.

Rush Limbaugh chimed in recently with his typical passion and candor on the unconstitutional actions of several big city mayors who told Chick-fil-A—and, implicitly, any business that values free speech or stands for traditional values—that there are not welcome in these mayors' cities:

What do we have? We have two mayors who are essentially Stalinist, who have had no problem whatsoever—not one problem at all—with going before the microphones and telling an American business, "You are not welcome here. And if you come here, you will be penalized or whatever the hell will happen." All because the guy who owns the outfit happens to be a publicly professed Christian who believes that "marriage" has a specific definition.... This is a direct assault. That's a direct assault on Christianity. That is a direct assault on Christians. With economic punishment thrown in including threats from government officials that are in clear violation of the Constitution.

Thank you, Rush, for recognizing that these attacks on Chick-fil-A are simply the latest in a series of assaults on freedom of speech for Christians and those of other faiths who believe marriage to be the union of one man and one woman. These attacks on religious freedom will only continue and increase in frequency and boldness, if the pro-gay marriage radicals have their way and impose same-sex marriage on the entire nation.

Another voice heard from lately is Rick Santorum, a longtime ardent supporter of marriage; The Blaze reported Santorum's appearance on CNBC as the former Senator spoke up strongly in support of marriage and against the radical mayors' recent attacks on free speech.

"You just keep seeing this more and more, which is the absolute intolerance of the left in America. There can be no dissent from what their position is," he said on "The Kudlow Report."

The idea that the company would face pressure for its leader's beliefs was antithetical to the idea of the United States.

"This is why the Hugenots came to America," Santorum said, adding the Dutch Reform Church and Catholics to that list.

"They didn't want the government telling them what to believe and that they couldn't say things in public, that they had to keep it to themselves," he said, or be "barred from doing business."

Reverend Billy Graham has ministered to presidents and to peasants. He has shared Truth for decades with everyone who would listen. Earlier this spring he came out strongly in support of the North Carolina marriage amendment because it was in keeping with God's plan for marriage. Last week Rev. Graham shared his own statement in support of the Cathy family and marriage.

I want to express my support for my good friends Truett Cathy and his son Dan Cathy, and for their strong stand for the Christian faith. I've known their family for many years and have watched them grow Chick-fil-A into one of the best businesses in America while never compromising their values. Chick-fil-A serves each of its customers with excellence, and treats everyone like a neighbor. It's easy to see why Chick-fil-A has become so popular across America.

Support for marriage is not about hatred. It is about recognizing that marriage is the union of a man and woman because children have a right to their mother and father. Dan Cathy realizes this truth. Whether a liberal or conservative, anyone can understand why Mr. Cathy ought to have the right to share his personal opinions. The latest attacks on Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A in the name of "tolerance" are constitutionally indefensible, and just the latest egregious example of the extremes to which anti-marriage radicals will go in an effort to silence those who disagree with them.

But the American people won't stand for it!

Supporting Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A has been a wonderful opportunity to engage people in the discussion over how same-sex marriage threatens the religious freedom of Christians and the freedom of speech of all Americans who support marriage. Imagine how this situation would be different if same-sex marriage were the law of the land!

Two Simple Actions to Continue Our Success

There are two favors I have to ask of you today.

First, please keep up your support for the Cathy family and Chick-fil-A as they continue to be targeted by same-sex marriage activists. This Friday around the nation, same-sex marriage activists will be hosting their own protest event at Chick-fil-A restaurants—"Same-Sex Kiss Day."

So, the Cathys need our continued prayers and encouragement—after all, threats to their constitutional freedoms aren't going to disappear because of just one day of great sales. A quick visit to www.thankchickfila.com is all that it takes: do you have thirty seconds to sign the letter to the Cathys and stand in solidarity with them to support marriage?

Second, I would ask you to do is to please pray for our founder and friend Maggie Gallagher. Maggie recently stepped down from the NOM board to care for her mother, who is in hospice. Please pray for her and her family.

Chicago Cardinal Slams Mayor Rahm Emanuel over Chick-fil-A comments

In response to Mayor Emanuel's infamous "Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago values” remark, Cardinal Francis George had this to say:

Recent comments by those who administer our city seem to assume that the city government can decide for everyone what are the “values” that must be held by citizens of Chicago.

I was born and raised here, and my understanding of being a Chicagoan never included submitting my value system to the government for approval. Must those whose personal values do not conform to those of the government of the day move from the city? Is the City Council going to set up a “Council Committee on Un-Chicagoan Activities” and call those of us who are suspect to appear before it? I would have argued a few days ago that I believe such a move is, if I can borrow a phrase, “un-Chicagoan.”

New York Times on the Chick-fil-A Business

The editors of the New York Times include comments and conclude this way:

"...Speaker Christine Quinn of the New York City Council also overreached when she sent a letter, on Council stationery, calling for the president of New York University to “sever your relationship” with a Chick-fil-A eatery on campus. “Let me be clear,” she wrote, “I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views.”

As a gay woman who recently got married, Ms. Quinn’s anger about Mr. Cathy’s comments is understandable. And she stressed on Monday that the letter was “solely my own opinion.” But, as a powerful city leader and a leading candidate for mayor, she and others in city governments should take care not to be seen muscling aside businesses whose owners don’t agree with their views. That won’t work, especially in a city as big, diverse and opinionated as New York."

NOM's Peters Reacts to News of Democrats Embracing SSM in Their Platform

"...Thirty-two states have defined marriage as between one man and one woman, prohibiting recognition of marriage in any other form. Thomas Peters of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) tells OneNewsNow that President Obama and his party are apparently forgetting that.

"He's reopening a can of worms that the voters in these states all kind of conclusively settled for themselves," he says. "And one of our big points is that obviously if the Democrats have their way, all of the marriage amendments passed in [those states and] certainly Florida and other swing states are in jeopardy."

NOM president Brian Brown believes the Democratic Party "has been captured by extremists ... like Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi who are determined to redefine marriage" in America. Peters says that being the case, the question for rank-and-file Democrats is what place they have at the table.

"It seems that the person who sort of leaked this news is [Massachusetts Congressman] Barney Frank," says Peters. "It's coastal liberals in states like California, New York, and Massachusetts that are more and more shaping the direction of the Democrat Party [sic], leaving behind Democrats with social conservative values."

Chick-fil-A in West Virginia Deemed Safe After Bomb Threat

Police and fire crews closed down the Chick-fil-A on Foxcroft Avenue in Martinsburg for nearly three hours following a bomb threat that was called in just before 1 p.m. today.

The caller mentioned that a "device" had been placed within the restaurant. The building was evacuated, but was deemed safe at about 3:45 p.m. after no bomb or any other type of device was discovered.

Martinsburg City Police and the Martinsburg Fire Department personnel investigated the scene, along with Berkeley County Sheriff Kenny Lemaster. A National Park Ranger with a canine unit arrived at the scene at approximately 2:45 p.m. to assist, and a second from the West Virginia State Police arrived later as well.

LSN: Bakery Sees Business Boom After 'Gay Wedding Cake' Refusal

The owner of a cake shop in Lakewood, Colorado said that, following a refusal to provide a wedding cake for a homosexual couple his business has more than doubled.

Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, told local media that this wasn’t the first time he had turned away homosexuals seeking wedding cakes, but it is the first time his stand for Christian principles has resulted in so much media attention and some death threats.

Phillips explained that since 1993 the family owned and operated business has refused about half-a-dozen requests for same-sex wedding cakes. However, on Sunday he said he was forced to call police because of several death threats over the latest refusal.

The situation developed on July 19 when two homosexuals entered the shop and announced they were getting “married” in Massachusetts and wanted to order a wedding reception cake for their reception in Colorado. When Phillips refused, one of the pair, 28-year-old Dave Mullins, is reported to have said, “F*** you and your homophobic cake shop,” and directed an obscene gesture at the owner before leaving.

Prop 8 Proponents Seek Supreme Court Review

The AP:

Backers of California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to overrule a federal appeals court that struck down the measure as unconstitutional.

Lawyers for the coalition of religious conservative groups that sponsored the ban, known as Proposition 8, petitioned the Supreme Court to review the lower court's finding that the 2008 amendment to the state constitution violated the civil rights of gay and lesbian Californians.

The move, which had been expected since a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued its 2-1 decision earlier this year, means the bitter, 4-year-old court fight over the ban could soon be resolved.

...The Supreme Court is expected to act on the petition this fall.

VA Gov. McDonnell Defends Chick-fil-A

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell waded into the still-simmering debate over Chick-fil-A today, saying that he didn't think that the fried chicken purveyor should be denied permits because of its donations to organizations that oppose same-sex marriage, a threat some elected officials have made in recent weeks.

"I love chicken. If we start having governments issue permits or zoning changes, or withholding those because of someone's political or religious beliefs, we are going down a very bad road. I think people have an ability to start and grow a business regardless of their political beliefs," he said on WTOP's Ask the Governor this morning.
