Massachusetts Gay Couple Sue Bishop Over Dropped Plan to Host Same-Sex Weddings on Purchased Property

The Boston Globe:

James Fairbanks and Alain Beret, married business partners from Sutton, had been searching for the perfect property for nearly two years when they discovered Oakhurst, an aging mansion on 26 beautiful acres in Northbridge. The former retreat center, which was affiliated with the Diocese of Worcester and had been on the market for some time, would be the ideal spot for their next venture: an inn that would host weddings and other big events.

When the Diocese of Worcester unexpectedly dropped out of negotiations with them in June, Fairbanks and Beret were shocked — and flummoxed. Then, they say, a church attorney inadvertently forwarded their broker an e-mail from Monsignor Thomas Sullivan, chancellor of the diocese, advising a church broker that he was no longer interested in selling to Fairbanks and Beret “because of a potentiality of gay marriages” there.

Beret, 59, and Fairbanks, 57, plan to file a lawsuit Monday morning in Worcester Superior Court against Sullivan, the bishop, the church’s real estate agent, and the nonprofit retreat center, the House of Affirmation, alleging they discriminated against Beret and Fairbanks on the basis of sexual orientation in the course of a real estate negotiation, violating state law.

“I have lived quietly in the mainstream for nearly 60 years, and I expected to continue that,” Beret said in an interview yesterday. “But I will not continue that at the expense of my dignity.”

Sullivan, in a phone interview yesterday, said he did not even know Fairbanks and Beret were gay, and that his e-mail was taken out of context. The talks fizzled, he said, because the men could not secure financing for their first offer, and their second offer was unacceptable to the church.

“They didn’t have the money, that was it,” he said.

It was not until weeks after the financing fell through, he said, that the church’s broker told him that, in her presence, Fairbanks and Beret had mentioned hosting same-sex weddings at Oakhurst.

Sullivan said, however, that the church, as a matter of policy, will not sell properties where Masses have been celebrated to people who plan to host same-sex weddings. The church will not sell to developers who plan to transform them into abortion clinics either, he said — or to bars, lounges, or other kinds of uses that church officials deem inappropriate.

“We wouldn’t sell our churches and our properties to any of a number of things that would reflect badly on the church,” he said. “These buildings are sacred to the memory of Catholics.”

Marriage Amendment Campaigns Court Minnesota Muslims

StarTribune:

Winnie Okafor went to Tawfiq Islamic Center in north Minneapolis on Friday stumping for yes votes for the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. The Rev. Grant Stevensen was at the opposition headquarters, working with young Muslim staffers to get out the no vote.

As Minnesota's Muslim population grows, both sides of the marriage amendment debate are vying to tap their growing activism and win over an estimated 50,000 potential voters.

... At the Muslim worship center at the Somali Mall in south Minneapolis, men and women signed petitions pledging to vote for the amendment. The mothers among the worshippers tried to quiet their young children with snacks while they listened to Okafor.

As a community relations coordinator for Minnesota for Marriage, the main group campaigning for the amendment, Okafor said she has attended mosque prayer services in the Twin Cities area like the one at the Somali Mall to encourage Muslims to vote for the amendment.

"We're getting good support from them ... both from the members of these mosques and also the imams," she said. "We're getting people signing our pledge forms. It's a big deal, because you're getting the voter to think ahead to what they're going to do in November.

"I think a lot of them are really sensitive to ... what becomes of the way we can raise our children when marriage is defined contrary to something our faith holds so dear."

Senator McDonald's Resume Needs Updating

Email Header Image

Recently, I read a letter to the editor from a local New York paper—The Record from Troy, NY—that posed a great question. The author said he's been receiving mailings from Senator Roy McDonald's campaign trumpeting his accomplishments in office, but with one conspicuous omission from the list—namely, the Senator's vote to legalize same-sex marriage. The author thought this was strange, since McDonald had claimed that taking political favors and money in exchange for his vote on this issue was "the right thing to do." If it was the right thing to do, why not celebrate it and advertise it?

Well, the reason is clear: McDonald, like his fellow Senator Mark Grisanti, knows that imposing same-sex marriage on the people of New York was the wrong thing to do—both ethically and politically. And these corrupt politicians are hoping voters forget their betrayal, so they won't have to face the music on Primary Day this Thursday. But voter's haven't forgotten, and they're cuing up the orchestra to play these clowns off the stage!

Will you help us with your urgently-needed, immediate contribution of $25, $50, or $100 today, so that we can redouble our efforts on your behalf in the final hours leading up to this crucially important primary election?

Without your immediate help, we can't put the necessary resources in place in these critical last hours to make sure that Senators McDonald and Grisanti get sent packing even before the general election. We're prepared to continue fighting on your behalf all the way through November, but we have an opportunity to send the message this week that the people of New York stand for traditional marriage and won't be bullied by greedy, out-of-touch politicians.

The NOM PAC NY has the message and strategy necessary to get the word out to New York voters so that they remember this election day how their elected representatives betrayed them last year in Albany, when they took Mayor Bloomberg's favors and funds in exchange for their votes to impose a redefinition of marriage on the Empire State! We're kicking into high gear with targeted phone calls and mailings between now and Thursday to ensure that New York residents hear this important message!

But we can't get this word out unless you send us your generous contribution today! Please help us with your critical donation of $25, $50, or $100 now so that we don't lose this important opportunity to oust these two treacherous Senators from office!

The elite fat-cats in Albany betrayed the voters of New York and imposed same-sex marriage on the State without even considering letting the people vote. Well, in this election, you get to vote whether they like it or not. Stand up with your fellow New Yorker's this Thursday and cast your vote for family, for marriage, for religious liberty, and for politicians being accountable to those who got them elected instead of to those who offer to fill their coffers while in office! Stand for marriage this week! Get out the vote!

Focus on the Family's Jim Daly on "The Professor Who Dared Rock the Boat"

Focus on the Family's Jim Daly:

Professor Regnerus wasn’t being attacked because his research lacked academic rigor – in fact, his peer-reviewed study was by far the largest, most statistically valid study on the topic to be done. He was being attacked because his scientific findings didn’t square with the liberal perspective. When it comes to this topic of homosexual parenting, numerous other studies have been published that utilized all kinds of sloppy techniques, all intended to generate a desired outcome – that children do just fine in homosexual households. None of the professors who have conducted those studies have been subjected to similar investigations, even though their bias is obvious and their work deeply flawed.

The indignity that befell Professor Regnerus notwithstanding, the findings of his study should embolden and hearten those who believe in the biblical definition of marriage.

Here’s why:

Reality is not going to contradict God’s law and humans have the best chance to flourish when they follow it.

Michelle Obama Enlists Aid of Gay Activists at HRC Event

Politico:

Michelle Obama pledged her husband's continued support of gay rights issues on Wednesday, as she addressed a major LGBT group.

"My husband has stood strong for the basic values of freedom, justice and equality that make this country great. And he always will," she told a Human Rights Campaign lunch here.

... She also made an appeal to activists in the crowd. "What I want to say here today is that we don’t have a single minute to waste. We really don’t. Time is of the essence. And we need you all to be fired up, but we need you to work like never before," she said. "I mean, truly work like never before. We need you out there every single day between now and November the 6th."

Not to be missed in all the quotes and highlights from the two political conventions is this one by Mitt Romney's VP Paul Ryan:

Of Mitt Romney he says: "Not only [is he] a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at its best."

Washington’s Bishops: SSM Will Have "Chilling Effect" on Religious Freedom

Catholic Culture World News:

The bishops of the State of Washington have issued a statement urging Catholics to uphold the definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman during the upcoming marriage referendum.

At the November referendum, the state’s voters will have the opportunity to ratify or reject a new state law allowing same-sex marriage.

“If the state successfully disconnects marriage from the potential inherent to sexual union between a man and woman, the civil meaning of marriage will be lost, and the institution that results will be a genderless contract without reference to children,” the bishops said. “The foundational nature of marriage for the good and the strength of human society will be harmed beyond repair. Faithful, monogamous marriages between one man and one woman will cease to be the legally-established social standard for uniting children with their parents, even though social science has established that children do best when raised in homes with married mothers and fathers.”

UK Government Lawyer to European High Court: Christians Should Leave Faith at Home or Resign

The UK Christian Institute:

Christians in Britain should leave their faith at home or accept that they might have to get another job, a Government lawyer has told the European Court of Human Rights.

The comment came as the Court heard the cases of four Christians, including that of registrar Lillian Ladele who was disciplined for her stance on civil partnerships. All four say the UK Government failed to protect their religious liberty.

Dinah Rose QC, representing Miss Ladele, told the Court that her client had been used as “an instrument” of social change by her former employer Islington Borough Council.

She warned the judges that the submission from the United Kingdom’s Government entails “permitting Islington to treat Miss Ladele as an instrument for the propagation of its public message.

“And we submit that to treat a person, an individual, as a means and not an aim in themselves, is fundamentally incompatible with individual human dignity and incompatible with convention rights.”

James Eadie QC, acting on behalf of the Government, argued that the rights of the four Christians were only protected in private, and that they could not “insist on being able to manifest their beliefs in any way they choose”.

He argued that a Christian “under difficulty” is not discriminated against if they have the choice of “resigning and moving to a different job”.

Video: Recapping the Arguments for Minnesota Marriage Amendment

Kalley Yanta reviews some of the key issues related to the Minnesota Marriage Amendment:

"This debate is about two competing views of marriage. Those who oppose the marriage protection amendment believe that marriage is fundamentally about what adults want for themselves. They see marriage as essentially a private matter and argue that society should let any two eligible adults regardless of gender form a relationship and have it legally recognized as a marriage. Now we believe that marriage was created by God as the union of one man and one woman for a very specific purpose. Not only does marriage unite the couple to each other but it was created to care for the next generation. We believe marriage is not merely a private matter but serves a very public purpose of providing the ideal environment for fathers and mothers to raise any children born of their union. These two views of marriage cannot co-exist because there can only be one definition of marriage in society. Which view of marriage prevails in Minnesota is what is at stake in this campaign."

Democrat Delegate Will Oppose Party's Stance on Same-Sex Marriage

World Mag:

On the eve of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) at Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena, visiting pastor Fernando Cabrera preached a fiery Sunday morning sermon at the conservative First Baptist Church in the heart of downtown.

The Liberty University graduate and New York City minister decried President Barack Obama's support for "gay marriage," and the Democratic Party's plan to add same-sex "marriage" to its platform.

Cabrera spoke of the erosion of traditional marriage and warned that "darkness has come upon our land."

He congratulated the Southern Baptist congregation on its success in helping to pass a North Carolina constitutional amendment prohibiting gay "marriage" in the state.

Cabrera also talked about what he'll be doing this week in Charlotte: serving as a Democratic delegate to the DNC.

The New York City councilman and pastor of New Life Church in the Bronx said that being a social conservative in a party that supports legalized abortion and gay "marriage" isn't easy. His goal at the DNC this week: "To make as much noise as possible - New York-style."

[Updated with Video] NFL Star Burgess Owens Tells Blacks Not to Vote for Obama Over Same-Sex Marriage

WorldNetDaily:

Retired National Football League star Burgess Owens, a Super Bowl champion with the Oakland Raiders, has urged African-Americans not to vote for Barack Obama simply on the basis of race.

In his newly published e-book, “It’s All About Team: Exposing the Black Talented Tenth,” Owens recounts how he grew up as a liberal Democrat and supported Jimmy Carter.

...“We are going to have to have black ministers stand up once again,” he said. “Unfortunately, I have been a little disappointed that we have issues out there like traditional marriage, abortion, school education, and we have so much silence from the black community, from black preachers, because they understand first hand the impact of all that. We can no longer support those who are against the faith.”

... “There is still a desire, by most within the black community, to recapture for their children the ideals of a traditional family where moms and dads commit to each other and to their children through the lifelong bonds of marriage,” Owens concludes. “We can be the kind of example as the black middle class was for decades to give encouragement to others who follow.”

UK Daily Mail: Regnerus "Cleared in School Inquiry"

The UK Daily Mail reports on the exoneration of the Regnerus study:

"A professor who came under attack over a critical research paper about children of gay-marriages will not be fired after being backed up by his school.

The University of Texas-Austin came to the defense of Professor Mark Regnerus after his controversial journal article was published, claiming children of same-sex parents are more likely to be on welfare or depressed than the offspring of heterosexual couples.

His work featured in the July issue of Social Science Research and prompted public outcry after gay rights advocates criticized it as being one-sided and biased.

‘The university expects the scholarly community will continue to evaluate and report on the findings of the Regnerus article and supports such discussion.’

...Rose now plans to pursue his claims with the American Sociological Association, not happy with the findings of a four-member advisory panel who trawled through Regnerus' computers and 42,000 emails before deciding to back his methodology.

'Since it's a sensitive subject that offers quite different conclusions from previous studies, it's not surprising that it has drawn critics,' he told FoxNews.com.

Regnerus’ New Family Structures Study sampled 3,000 people ages 18-39, of whom 248 said their mothers or fathers had a same-sex relationship while they were growing up.

He claimed his study was unique because of its large sample size and that previous studies 'seemed designed to conclude there are no differences between children of the two groups'."

HuffPo: Dad Wears Skirt In Solidarity With His 5-Year-Old Son

The Huffington Post:

When it comes to supporting his son's unconventional wardrobe, Nils Pickert talks the talk and walks the walk.

The German dad explains in Emma magazine that he wears women's clothes (including nail polish) to help his 5-year-old son feel good about going out in dresses and skirts.

... Pickert is not the only parent to speak up for a child whose dress preferences stand out from the norm. American mom Cheryl Kilodavis, who wrote a picture book called "My Princess Boy" about her son Dyson, went on The Today Show in January 2011 to discuss the importance of accepting children for who they are -- no matter what they wear. "Sooner or later my hope is that the world will embrace the uniqueness that is really within all of us," she told Meredith Vieira.

Rev. Owens: "No One, Including Barack Obama, Has a Moral or Civil Right to Redefine Marriage"

Rev. Bill Owens in The Blaze:

"...to use the civil rights as a cover for such a cause is a hijacking of the movement, and we who were a part of that movement reject it. We who marched with Rev. King did not march one inch or one mile to promote same-sex marriage, and the NAACP has abandoned its historical responsibility to protect the civil rights movement.

In the same way, by embracing gay marriage, President Obama, our beloved son, has begun to lead the country down an immoral path.

As black pastors who must always adhere to the teachings of the Bible and our own consciences, we cannot approve of same-sex marriage and its normalcy in law or society, nor lead our congregations down that path.

Those in the gay community are rightly to be protected from violence and harassment, and to be able to vote, to hold jobs and enjoy the general rights of citizens. But no one, including Barack Obama, has a moral or civil right to redefine marriage."
